FIDE's standard says four pawns must fit comfortably on one square. US Chess figures come from a club FAQ and a rulebook quote on the US Chess forum (see sources), so check the current US Chess rulebook before buying for a rated event.
How to measure in 3 steps
- Measure one square. Use a ruler across one playing square, edge to edge, not the whole board.
- Measure the king. Stand it on a flat surface and measure to the top of the crown. Then measure its base across the widest part.
- Compare. Enter the numbers above. The king's base should fill most of a square, but not touch the edges.
Common sizing mistakes
| Mistake | Better habit |
|---|---|
| Measuring the whole board | Measure one square. A board's outer size includes its border. |
| Buying by the 'size 4' or 'size 5' label | Makers use different labels. Check the king height in inches or millimetres on the listing. |
| Choosing a king that is too wide | If the base is close to the square's edges, pieces collide when you move them. |
